Compared with conventional motors, variable-frequency motors and conventional motors don't differ much in appearance, but they have significant differences in performance and application. A variable-frequency motor is powered by a variable-frequency power supply or a frequency converter, allowing its speed to be adjusted. Variable-frequency motors can be categorized into constant-torque and constant-power types, whereas conventional motors are typically powered by mains-frequency electricity and have relatively fixed rated speeds. In a conventional motor, the fan rotates simultaneously with the motor’s rotor. In a variable-frequency motor, however, an additional axial-flow fan is used for cooling. The auxiliary fan operates at a fixed speed, ensuring that the motor meets its cooling requirements even when running at low speeds. Consequently, if a conventional fan is used in a variable-frequency motor and operated at low speeds, it may overheat and burn out.
